Dr. Roy (Ex-Chief Scientist & Former Head, Ceramic Membrane Division, CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata) possesses 33 years experience in the field of Separation Science & Technology and Materials Science, particularly on ceramic materials and geological science. He, as Co-founder member of Ceramic Membrane Division, developed low cost ceramic membranes and demonstrated their application through installation of 68 nos. of Arsenic & Iron Removal Plants (500-60,000 LPD) in West Bengal and North Eastern Region. First time CSIR-CGCRI demonstrated the ceramic MF- RO Plants (40,000 and 80,000 LPD) for turbid / saline underground and river (Ichamati) water purification during the year August 2008 and September 29, 2012 respectively in West Bengal for distribution of potable water within the community. His group also received “CSIR-CGCRI Diamond Jubilee Award” for Best Technology (April, 2011- March, 2012) on pretreatment of turbid water and polishing of iron and arsenic contaminated water using ceramic micro-filtration technique. He has developed ceramic MF membranes as well as Single Layer Ceramic UF Membrane up to 1 meter length over indigenously developed low cost clay-alumina porous single & multichannel tubular support (planned for Tie-up with Industry).
Dr. Roy possesses 8 patents (including 2 US patent) and 1 patent applied for USA, Germany, France, Japan and 30 publications in international journals & 08 publications in national journals and 29 conference proceedings. He delivered 25 invited lectures. He received Post Doctoral Fellow award at Hermann-Föttinger Institut, Technische Universität, Berlin, Germany (1987-1990). He received 2nd prize in the 5th European Photomicrographic Competition on Martensitic Transformation, held at Frankfurt, Germany, July 14-18, 1989. Four of his group received four nos. best paper awards. Dr. Roy supervised B. Tech and M. Tech students jointly with the Faculty members of Calcutta and Jadavpur University and currently 3 students are enrolled for Ph. D. under his guidance. Two students have already been received Ph.D. award. He was Principal Investigator of 3 projects and Co-PI of 10 projects sponsored by DST & DBT, GOI; Min. of Rural Development & Min. of Drinking Water & Sanitation; Directorate of Vanaspati, Vegetable Oils and Fats, Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs; Technology Mission on Oil Seeds, Pulses & Maize, Dept. of Agriculture, GOI; Activity Leader of CSIR-CGCRI Supra Institutional project and Activity Leader of 2 nos. of CSIR Network projects coordinated by NEERI, Nagpur & CLRI, Chennai.
His current research interests include development of ceramic membranes, system design & development for drinking water purification and wastewater treatment, process development for liquid (aqueous & non-aqueous) and gas separation, membrane contactors for CO2 capture, catalytic membrane reactors for hydrogen recovery , enzymatic membrane reactor, Nanotechnology, Material Science, Engineering Geology, Environmental Engg., etc.
He was engaged as Visiting Faculty at WBUT affiliated two Engineering Colleges attached in the Dept. of Civil Engineering since 2014 and teaches Engineering Geology, Environmental Pollution, Environmental Engineering & Engineering Materials and was engaged as Adjunct Professor, Amity University, since 2015 to January 2018 and Kolkata and Visiting Faculty, Adamas University, Barasat, Kolkata, since August 2017 to July 2018 and now currently engaged as Professor Emeritus at Adamas University, Barasat, Kolkata since November 24, 2018.
